|
Name:
Alan Field
Age:30s
Then: Alan hated his job as a courier, but was concerned that
without formal qualifications, his prospects were limited.
Now: Alan gained a sales position with FAI Security, where he worked
for a year. He then moved into a new retail sales job with Harvey Norman, which
allows him more flexibility to follow his other interests of acting, TV and radio.
Alan says: "Ian helped me realise that it wasnt qualifications
I needed, but people skills and the right attitude - all the people who
make it in life have skills dealing with other people."
"Im much more positive and confident than I used to be, and
I find this rubs off on other people people respond to you differently.
Now I find myself talking to people, Ill be in a restaurant and
just strike up a conversation."
"Getting the job with FAI was a huge confidence booster, and I started
to realise that I did have personal skills I never had the opportunity
use as a courier."
We say: "In order to change careers, Alan needed to recognise that
the skills he wanted to use more in his work - people skills - were skills he
already had."
"Alan's success is also a great example of someone who looks at the big picture,
and takes a series of small steps towards this goal. First, his job with FAI gave
him an opportunity to further develop his people and sales skills. Now working
at Harvey Norman, he's utilising these skills, while the shorter working hours
will enable him to focus on another area of his life he wants to develop - acting."
"Like Alan, once people have a plan, it's simply breaking that plan
down into small pieces, and using persistence and momentum to realise
their goal."
