Interestingly one of the sleeping giant issues born out of our engagement research from last year is now gaining greater awareness as the real blockage behind effective employee engagement and motivation – and that issue is employee clarity.
It’s a fact that we are all being asked to ‘do more with less’. Therefore, how do we maximise productivity and performance simply and easily? The key to intelligently fast-tracking productivity and performance is having highly engaged employees.
1. Employee Clarity (ranked 4th previously)
“Most employees know what they don’t want; fewer know what really motivates and engages them. If employees don’t know what motivates them – how am I as their people leader going to have any chance?”
2. Time Poor
“We pay our people, that should motivate them. Also I’m too busy…engagement isn’t part of my KPI’s … anyway it’s a human resources issue isn’t it?”
3. Skills, Tools & Resources
“Our people leaders/managers aren’t psychologists, counsellors & coaches. They don’t have the confidence, skills or tools to have a meaningful discussion (Stay Interview) with their employees around motivation and engagement”
“We are not sure what the ideal engagement solutions are for our organisation. We keep procrastinating and our indecision means we haven’t really committed to any engagement initiatives yet. Yikes – it’s almost time to do our next staff engagement survey!”
5. Buy in & Commitment
“We haven’t been able to get full support for employee engagement from the most important areas of the business yet”
6. Ineffective Solutions (was the top barrier previously, now dropped to last place)
“The engagement initiatives we have put in place aren’t getting the results we had hoped for. In fact the more we give our employees the more it seems to create the whinge entitlement culture”
In just 12 months and the engagement research shows, HR leaders have become increasingly aware that getting employees clear on what engages and motivates them is the first most important step in intelligently maximising workforce productivity and performance.
The fact is that most employee know what they don’t want, fewer know what really does engage and motivate them. If employees are not clear then people leaders will have virtually no chance in engaging them.
The good news is that more than 70% of engagement and motivation (therefore productivity) can be improved by the employee themselves.
